Losing a child
There is nothing anyone can say or do to ease the pain of losing a child. It is the most gut-retching experience you will ever have to live through. Right now, you may be finding it extremely difficult to do practically anything, and it will feel like you’re losing your mind. That’s why it’s very important to keep telling yourself that you will pull through this.
It is also important to note that in this context, a child can be of any age – even if they were adult when they passed on. As a parent, you know they will always be seen as a child in your eyes. Talking to a counsellor who specialises in child bereavement is possibly the biggest step you can take to help you through the grieving process.
Right now, you’ll probably feel very isolated. Friends and family will always be there for you, but they may never have been in your situation, so how can they truly understand what you’re going through?
Talking with other parents who have lost a child can be of great help. Alternatively, you can join any of our online support groups. Talk to grieving parents all over the world through the absentFriends forum. There is a specific section for those who have lost a child, and sub groups depending on your child’s age and circumstances.
There are many self help books available for you to read. Click here to go through to our book reviews section. You’ll also find some useful links to other websites.
