Choosing speakers

You may want to ask family and friends if they wish to speak at the funeral. Some may even come to you to ask if they can. When you’re deciding who to ask, have a think about those who really made an impression on your loved one.

Sometimes it makes it easier for all involved if one or two of the speakers aren’t too close, as it can be a highly emotional time. Couple that with the stress of public speaking and it can all be a bit too much for some people.

Because of this, it’s important to realise that it’s okay if you or family and friends don’t want to speak at the funeral. Sometimes it’s just too hard and people will understand. Remind yourself of this and tell your speakers.

Once you’ve asked your speakers, give them a little direction and let them know how long you want them to speak for. Something else you can suggest to your speakers if they feel under pressure is to choose a poem or reading instead.
